Myopia Control / Orthokeratology Evaluation

What is Myopia Control?

Myopia(short-sightedness) control is a method used to slow down myopia progression when children are at young
age. It is important because it protects children from the risk of sight threatening problems related to high myopia (e.g. glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachments) or even blindness after they grow up.
We recommended children age between 7-16 years old to start myopia control to protect them from developing eye
disease as they age. The myopia control treatments we offer are:
●      DIMS HOYA Myosmart spectacle lens
●      H.A.L.T. Highly Aspherical Lenslet Target Technology - ESSILOR Stellest spectacle lens
●      Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)
●      Peripheral defocus soft contact lens (e.g. COOPER VISION MySight) or spectacle lens (e.g. ZEISS MyoVision Pro)
●      Progressive spectacle lenses for children - ESSILOR Myopilux

What is Orthokeratology(Ortho-K)?

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K), is a non-surgical procedure using customize contact lens to gently shape the curvature of the cornea to improve vision, so that its users can see clear without wearing glasses/contact lens correction during the day.

Benefits of Ortho-K

1.    Clear vision without glasses or contact lens in daytime
2.    Reversible and non-surgical vision correction
3.    Slow down myopia progression in children

Suitable candidates:

✓    Children age with rapid myopia progression
✓    Under -4.00D myopia and less than -1.50cyl
✓    Age above 7 yro or those who are capable to understand and comply with treatment procedure
✓    Adults prefer a safe and reversible treatment for clear daytime vision than irreversible refractive surgery

What’s the procedure of Ortho-K treatment?

Ortho-K fitting will be performed after a comprehensive eye examination. After ruling out any eye disease or unsuitable refractive error. Ortho-K fitting is similar to a typical contact lens consultation, however, optometrist will perform a corneal topography to understand the shape of your eyes. Base on the result, suitable candidate will be prescribed with a pair of custom-made RGP lenses to reshape the shape of his/her cornea to improve vision. The wearer wears the lenses at night to sleep for typically 6-7 hours/night to achieve clear vision in daytime without glasses or contact lens.
All ortho-K wearers are required to return for regular eye check as indicated by the optometrist to ensure optimal eye health and vision is achieved throughout the whole treatment period.
